Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert an image from one format to another?โ–ผ

Drop your pictures onto the box (or click it to choose them), pick PNG, JPG or WebP, and download the result. A single picture converts the moment you add it. If you add several, press the Convert button and then download them one by one or all together as a ZIP file.

Are my pictures uploaded anywhere?โ–ผ

No. Your browser does all the work on your own device. The pictures are never sent to a server, which matters for photos of people, documents, ID cards and receipts. You can even switch to airplane mode after the page loads and it keeps working.

Which formats can I convert from and to?โ–ผ

You can open PNG, JPG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF files (as far as your browser supports them), and save as PNG, JPG or WebP.

Which format should I choose?โ–ผ

Choose JPG for photos where a small file matters. Choose PNG for screenshots, logos and anything with sharp edges or transparency. Choose WebP when you want the smallest files and the place you will use them supports it, since it handles both photos and transparency.

What happens to transparent backgrounds?โ–ผ

PNG and WebP keep transparency. JPG cannot be transparent, so see-through areas are filled with a colour: white by default, or black or any colour you choose.

Does converting reduce the quality?โ–ผ

PNG output is lossless, so nothing is lost. JPG and WebP are lossy: the Quality slider trades file size against detail, and 80 to 90 looks the same to most eyes. Converting a JPG to JPG again, or a lossy file repeatedly, loses a little each time, so keep your originals.

Is the photo location and camera information kept?โ–ผ

No. Converting draws the picture fresh, so hidden data such as GPS location, camera model and date taken is not copied into the new file. That is useful for privacy, but it also means that information is gone from the converted copy. The picture is still turned the right way up.

Why can't I choose WebP on my device?โ–ผ

Some browsers, notably older versions of Safari, can open WebP files but cannot create them. In that case the WebP button is switched off. Chrome, Edge and Firefox can create WebP files.
